the rock...671!!!
came home last night and notice my jardi hovering at the bottom of the tank, i quickly turned the light on to examine him. his scales looked ragged and bare, his slime coat was gone!!! for some reason my 7in. flagtail proch decided to eat the slime coat of of him. not sure why, they have been living together for well over a year and the proc has a steady supply of algae wafers. i've heard of proc going after birchirs, but a 14in. jardi with an attitude?!? immediatly moved the proc and started to treat my jardi. dosed with salt, raised temp., melixed, and stresscoated (to put slimecoat back). alot of his color has faded but he is still swimming around (still has not eaten yet) any other suggestions? should i dose with black water, permafix, etc...? or am i going overboard with meds? now that my proc has a taste for slimecoat, can he be mixed with anything?

ok, i think some infection is beginning to set in...his rays are beginning to show and some of his smaller scale around his tail are turning reddish and peeling off!!! he's still swimming around (thankfully), but i don't know what else to do. would a WC help any?

i would do a water change. don't over do the meds what you've done is fine just WC

Sad to hear bro. any changes as of yet? I know one Japanese technique for sick arowanas is to lower the water level to a few inches. They say it saves the aros strength by limiting its swimming room, but still keeping it comofortably near the surface for food when it is ready to start eating.

The first thing you need to do is test the water for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and ph and also post these stats and the temp of the tank here.

If the fish has patches or streaks of blood appearing under the skin it means the fish has septicemia, does the fish look bloated or underweight at all?
Ragged/tattered fins would indicate finrot, but the symptom could also be other things too.

How much salt have you added to the tank also?

Can you also post the measurements of the tank plus the tanks total fish stocking etc too please?

is it feeding and otherwise acting normally?

he's in a 40gal med tank for now (dropped the water level to 20gal, to minimize movement) nitrite/nitrate/ammonia all 0ppm, ph is neutral 7, been dosing with melafix, salt, betta leaves, and stresscoat. still the same symptoms, no appetite, and damaged scales, but i can see that his slimecoat is back around most of his body, just not near the damaged scales and fins. thanks for all the advise, gonna do a 10% tonight, hopefully he will pull thru this...

Flagtails sometimes get this habit, like some loachs and even plecos, once started they seldom stop, especially when kept with larger fish.

yeah, i'm afraid to put him with anything now...don't know why he started to eat it though. he loves the algae wafer i give him. i can put him in the pond outside, lots of algae there. but i like to look at him. guess its time to get another tank!!!
