I am new to arowanas and was thinking of buying a small jardini arowana that i seen at my lfs, and have a couple of questions.

1. I have read that they have a delicate stage when they are young, the one i am thinking of getting is about 4 in. at this size would it be past this stage?

2. How big do they get and how fast do they grow? I've been reading the arowana forum and some people say that they are a smaller arowana

3. I have also read that they are a meaner arowana, is this true? the store that has it now has it in with elephant nose, silver dollar, african goliath fish, etc.... and i was thinking of putting it in with some of the same.

4. What type of foods do they eat? I've watched a bigger arowana at the same store eat goldfish, but some people say that u shouldnt feed them that.

for your first Q- 4 inches is a great size, not to small at all

for the second- jar can grow alittle over 2 feet, 3 feet if your lucky, usually they grow about an inch a month.

third Q- jars do have a a bad rep for being the a pycho of the arowanas, but hearing from what you say about it at the shop, i would give tankmates a shot ;)

4th Q- jars will take a wide variety of food.

a high quality pellet should be the staple of its diet.
other things you can offer are, krill, market shrimp, fish flesh(fillet), blood worms, night crawlers, earth worms, scallop's, tubefix worms, crickets, squid, grasshopper (for larger arowanas) and even pinky mice

Ok they are a smaller arow, but they are a hell of a lot meaner and may not live with tank mates when they are bigger (about a foot) they need atlest a 5x2x2 bigger is better, your elephant noes is very delicate and may get eaten, and it is very bad to feed them goldfish as they carry deseasis and have no nutritional value, its ok to feed them as a treat but not all the time, you should feed them, beef heart, shrimp, krill, blood worms etc. if i was you i would try to get a silver or a black they grow larger but can live with tank mates.
hope this helps.

1. 4 inches is fine
2. 1-2 inches a month, they can reach 3~ feet
3. they are more aggresive than the others. mine gets along with all my fish (including african tiger fish)because i dont have another arowana in there.
4. feed them anything pretty much. they are carnivores. you can pump them on rosie reds and goldfish if you want them to grow fast, but thats not very healthy. kinda like steroids. or just get a high quality pellet staple for them. i feed mine krill and shrimp (market shrimp). and the occasional crickets.
