Hi All, relatively new here and i reckon this is best place to ask the question,

I can get a stunning 9" Jardini Arowana for £59.99, the fish looks great and I understand they are mid to top swimmers which will be great in my 6ft tank, however my concern is that I am informed they are not sociable.

Is this true???

I hope not as our Mbu puffer is the only mid range fish we would not be able to move. All our other fish are mainly bottom dwelling until night time then the 2 x Pangasius', 1 x Shark Catfish come out.

I hope the Arowana would fit in well.

For some reason the jardini aro is the most aggressive/ Mean spirited arowana. But they are very often succesfully kept in community tanks. Its basically a hit or miss depending on the individuals temperment. If i were you I would snatch that aro as fast as possible and get him in there to start acclimating b/c you never know.

Once hes in there keep a close eye on him. At 9 in that tends to be the time when they juuuuust start getting mean b/c generally in between 8-11 in they just all of a sudden become terrorizers of tanks.

Good luck and keep us posted.

i wouldnt bother. jars are a guarantee for dead fish in your community tank. maybe not in the first few weeks but he will start beating up others. doesnt matter of the others are bottom or mid level, he will bully them till death or eat them if they fit his mouth. jars are just no comm fishes, even though some people are very lucky to have them in comm. A friend of mine owns one and he has it with a big polyp. the aro bullies it and you can see its less happy. my advice: keep them alone.

Australian jardini are VERY aggressive and territorial\I have had them in the past and they can cause carnage. Small fish will be eaten or beaten up my one was with fish twice his size and still was a git.

:iagree: MASS CARNAGE!!!:D

Thanks peeps, thats interesting.

Based on what was said we will get the arowana and see as nearly every fish in the tank has a 1 out of 10 compatibility issue. After all we keep corydoras in with an Aba Aba and they get on great. But just in case the Aro does start to bully we can put him in the 5ft tank on his own.

Thanks ppl

Jars are supposed to be very aggressive, but I've experienced the opposite. Although mines not a pussy cat, he's been in a comm with other fish mostly smaller than him for over a year. The only fish he has killed were 2 fish that were similar in shape and habits (i.e. also top-of-the-tank).

He's now living happpily with fish from 4" to 45" ... he's around 40"...
