So I'm planning setting up another tank soon.. I have to finalize dimensions but I think it's going to be a 84" x 32"W
Now I want to grow out some rays, and like the look of jardinis.. Is there any way to make them less aggressive as I have heard them killing tank mates..
For a "monster" tank, would I be better off with growing out a silver and trading in to lfs once it outgrows the tank?

Thanks

It's hit or miss really. Depends on specimen. Not much you can. Grow it out with others and hope for the best. Why not do a black aro? Most peaceful of aros. Dark like a jar. And I've not read of one over 30" still. Even old specimens. And slimmer than a silver. You can probably keep it in there for life. Will ultimately be your decision depending how it looks and seems to you.

I've seen some black aros when I went down to the states.. Shop owner wanted $300 usd which is pretty high, I'll see what the prices in my lfs are on them, and I'll prob consider them... I will also try growing out a jardini and hope for the best lol.. I saw this one member on here with 9 in a tank, I guess you're right about the luck, and growing out with other tank mates :P

Yea she's got some nice fish, they're cramped in there which probably helps, she has power heads which she also says helps, and then of course the fact that there is so many of them. So if I were you, I'd probably get a bunch of silver dollars to grow out with the aro. Like a bunch lol.

I'll get the SD's some life insurance too while I'm at it :P

So black aros are the smallest growing and more placid arowana ?

this is not correct. blacks do get over 30". I recall bderek(brian) had a couple over 30". when I was at the Shedd I saw a 36"+ black. large blacks go silver like silver aros.

Blacks do turn silver-grey, but they definitly stay darker than a silver aro, that is evident by side by side comparison pics. And if you also read, I say I have not read of one over 30". So I'm not wrong if you want to get technical lol I have not said they max out at 30". And I wouldn't trust an eyeball size as we as people are usually a couple inches off give or take. And again blacks are quite a bit slimmer than silvers; something you can also tell from pictures of the two together. I doubt a black will reach 4'. But as always, I like to say anything is possible. Also I read through bedereks posts many times over and before he sold everything, his larger older black was 30" at 7 years old. His other one was a few years younger and caught up again staying around 30". His silvers however were in fact larger. He had two silvers and two blacks in his 450g. One could argue he was eyeballing. I believe his tank was 3' wide and the blacks didn't touch front to back.

They are known to be the most docile. But they aren't the smallest length wise but probably height and girth wise. Jars stay shorter in length, I've read of few over 2'.
