Is it alright to keep a small Jardini by itself or should it have 1-2 tank mates that are bigger than it? Right now I have him in a 60 till I get a 180 or 200+ later this month. He's about 3-4" and as of now he's with a 5" clown knife and a 7" senegal. However, everyday when I wake up I see him with white dots on him which makes me wonder if it's the clown knife picking on him or possibly ick. I'll post some pictures tonight.

i dont see why he couldnt be by himself. the white dots may be ich. caused by stress from the tankmates. pics would help.

yeah, but he can have it that soon why not? better having it sooner than later.

With Jars...I hear it's a hit or miss...trial and error thing with tankmates. I hear they get pretty aggressive by 8" or so.

NOT A HIT OR MISS....MORE ALONG THE LINE OF ALLLL HITS....MY JARS ALL HAD KILLED THEIR TANKMATES SOONER OR LATER...MOST OF THE TIME IT IS SOONER...FROM MY EXPERIENCE THE ONLY FISH TAHT CAN LIVE WITH JARS IS A RTC OR TSN...SOME SORT OF LOW KEY CAT....

I had the same experience. When my Jardini got close to the 8" mark he started terrorizing everyting in the tank. I keep him with a Leiarius longibarbis (Marbled Pim) and he seems to do well with him.

From some of the horror stories I've heard, keeping him alone may be a great idea.

I AGREE...I, LIKE MOST HERE, AM NOT SHAME TO ADMIT THAT I TRIED TO KEEP JARS WITH OTHER FISH...YEAH COSTLY MISTAKE =P

EVEN MY CATS WITH THE JAR NOW HAS SCARS AND THERE'S NO OTHER FISH EXCEPT THE JAR LIVING WITH THEM...

I BELIEVE IT IS THE CONSTANT MOVEMENT OR SUDDEN MOTION THAT SETS JARS OFF...I NOTICED THAT THE JAR PAYS ATTENTION TO THE CATS WHEN THEY ARE MOVING...EVEN COMES CLOSE TO THEM AS THEY SWIM....BUT WHEN THE CATS ARE STILL THE JAR DONT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THEM.

I've had sociable jars and alqaeda jars..most of them are of the latter persuasion, regrettably.

keep it alone, with cats or plecos...you'll end up by having a magnificent mastiff of a fish. I presently have jars alone in 250 gallon tanks...:)

when i was cycling my 150 gallon tank, i put in 6 baby convicts about 1 inch long. when i was ready to put my jardini (5-6in) i only managed to catch 4 of the convicts and i gave up on catching the other 2. Now my jardini has the 2 convicts as tankmates and so far its all good. im planning to buy a pleco as well.
