Hey guys, i collect bichirs and knifefish (limited selection in nz lol) My Gymnotus Carapo (banded knife) is 1 of 5 in nz and is my priority fish obviously, I am getting a suitably larger tank to cope with: 2 clown knives (maybe 1), 2 BGKs, several dels, senegals, chalceus, bala sharks and few other fish.

Now i really want to put a jar in there, and would probably get it at 15-20cm, i realize that these guys are often aggressive and kill stuff, although ive seen some people keep them with other aggressives... if i grow my banded to about 40cm (he can bully others too) and add a jaguar cichlid or a festae would a jardini be ok with these fellas?

Experiences please, and pics of your jardini and tankmates, aggression?

lol, snookie, i may buy it but you gotta give me time at least until tank is sorted, jeez didnt expect a kiwi to answer first.

sorry to hijack your thread, but are clown knifes readily available in nz? im in queensland and having trouble locating any. im actually heading to sydney at the end of the month to see if i have better luck down there. like i said sorry bout the hijack, just curious on the nz fish scene ;)

cheap as chips (for nz), about $20 kiwi for one, so that would be like 15 aus? just got meself a nice one with 14 spots :) We get some good fish, you get others, boy would i like a gar, but atm any info on a jar tank?

You won't know with the jar until you try. Like any fish, it comes down to personal temperament. Just seems more often than not, they are somewhat aggressive. Good tempered ones do exist though and with more people trying to keep them in community's nowadays, we seem to be hearing more and more success stories.
This is the last one I had. He never once showed any aggression but he was in with some very large tank mates. The jag was 17" and kept everyone in check.:D

Dude!! sick set up, awesome catfish and jar! the jag looks obese ;) and thats in a good way, thanks for posting the vid. So maybe the key to keeping the aggression down is to have a dominant cichlid that will challenge the jar or power, while having some large distraction fish that will keep him preoccupied with them rather than the knifefish. Henward, (hes on here too) keeps an RTG aro, uses an oscar to 'take the bullet' for the other fish, same sort of principle here?
