I've wanted an arowana for about a year now and finally talked my LFS owner down from $110 to $55. I am stoked! Its only 4 inches long so it should be good in my tank for quite a while before an upgrade is due. I've already done a fair amount of research but I would love go gdt some quick last minute advice from people who have had them. As far as acclimating, feeding, water conditions etc. My tank is completely covered with a glass top so it can't jump out. What's the beat staple food for a Jardini. And just double checking, burnt lfs labeled it as an Australian arowana so I'm assuming its a Jardini. Please give me some pointers because its my first aro and I want to be successful! Plus 55 bucks is still a lot of money for me.

you still planning on putting it with the Red devil and jack dempsey?

thanks. and yes I think i will. There will also be a 2 inch JD, 2 inch Jaguar, and a 3 inch Green Terror, and a 4 inch Black Ghost Knife fish, one gold fish, and a bunch of danios or some other peaceful fish that schools and can be a dither fish. Will danios work or should I get something different? I am going to closely moniter the arowana after I put it in and if its even slightly being bullied I have a 30 gallon tank already set up and cycled with 2 convicts in it that could work as a grow out tank. Hopefully I don''t have to do that though.

It is an 85 gallon 72"Lx15"Wx18"H. Obviously not a life tank but it should be good for the next year atleast (I am only guessing so correct me if I am wrong). That gives me time to save up and get a bigger tank. I think I want my next tank to be somewhere arounf 200 gallons with a big foot print. I would like to have my aro and possibly some rays. Thats a long ways down the road so I will cross that bridge when I get there.

That sounds like a good plan! Aros tend to grow quickly depending on their diet. I've had friends who said their aros grew around an inch a month. As long as you plan on upgrading in a year or so I would imagine you should be fine, though Im definitely not an expert so feel free to correct me anybody. I would also avoid putting him in the 30 if you can manage it. Post pics when you get him and good luck!

Your aro is going to outgrow the tank in 10 months.. Mine grew from 3" to 14" in 10 months. Maybe the tank was big but it grew fast. It will also eat your danios. You will start noticing the numbers decrease as the aro grows bigger. If you want to get your aro in dried food, I'd recommend taking out the danios. Good luck with the jar. Oh and also, COVER ALL HOLES AND OPENINGS ON THE TANK! It WILL find a way to sneak out.

Thanks! I'll definitely post pictures. I'm going to try my best to feed him primarily dried foods, because live foods I feel will make him grow faster than I want him too. Is there any way to tell if its male or female? are males larger than females or are females larger than males or are they the same size?

I've had people tell me that they slowly kill their tank mates over time so I wouldn't put anything too expensive in with him and hardy fish with him. I've given my aros crickets intill they started eating shrimp and krill. Aros can raise the amoina levels in your tank fast easily so do water changes more than normal almost 2x a week or that's just how I did it with my sliver and black.

haha I remember when I had a ruff time pitching in $50 for a fish. Just wait till you really get in to fish keeping. I've been everywhere from paying $250-300 for a 4 inch fish hah it's crazy if you think about it but its what I do, this is a big part of my life and its worth every penny!
