of course Jars tend to be fatter and darker in color while leis are slimer and silver with red dots on the scales

)Jars are generally darker and have a pink crescent on each scale and pink dots on their fins (pink comes out more with age).
Jars' barbels also point outwards while leis' point down..

Hmmm.... I didn't realize the barbel diff... but my jar's barbel def do point out... hmmm... but yes their body shape is much different actually. Jars have a much taller profile with a sloped forehead where leis are slimmer with a straight forehead. Price difference has more to do with rarety then anything else... also there are some color varietys in jars that I know of... their scales can range from silver to a more golden orange and also golden green. The cresents can range from orange, pink or red... also their fins can either be green blue to almost black or red... where I personally have only seen lies with reddish fins... I personally like jars much better and hey they're cheaper too!! But that's just me at least.... hope this helps more...
i think i read that lei's only have single spots on each fin... if it only has one spot per fin it is a lei? dont know how good the source was and cant seem to get a lei in the uk so im not very sure...

PRICE is the biggest difference I see. a baby jar in hawaii cost $30-$40 but a baby leichardi cost $200 easy.
agreeing with the above, i've kept both a lei and a jar at different times
apart from physical differences - leis are slimmer, more silver and have spots on each scale, jars are thicker, darker and have a more of a 'spoonhead', there's also a differences in temperament.
it could just be the fish's personalities, but my lei was more placid, calmer, even ate from my hand, while the jar is a MEAN sob, constantly attacking me through the glass..
pricewise, in melbourne leis and jars were selling at about $100AUD for a 4 incher, but i havent seen leis for sale in YEARS
unfortunately my lei jumped out of the tank while i was moving house, he was 20" at the time.
