What would cause a Jar to get gill curl? I have him in a 125 right now with a drip(2gph). Perfect water quality and lots of water movement. Does this heal or effect the fish?

I think it has to do with poor water conditions, but don't quote me on that, wait until someone who is 100% sure comes along

If its really bad, then the only way i know how to fix it is to trim its gills. only do this if there are no other options, I once had to do it to one of my silvers.

I'm not so sure I would consider trimming the gills... It's just at the very edge. I don't get it. There has to be another cause... I don't pay all this money in sewage and water bills every month for poor water quality in any of my tanks.:(

Gills are getting worse! My water specs are 7.0ph 0a 0n and less then 5ppm nitrate with my drip! Poor water quality is not an option! There has to be something we are overlooking! Something else has to be the cause.

I've also heard that hard water can be a problem... did you check that? The only reason I've ever heard for gill curl is poor water quality... just remember clear water doesn't always mean it's clean. Best of luck with this guy!

I have never had it.. could there also be a genetic predisposition?

I'm not sure about the genetic factor but aros seem to be more prone to it then some other fish... I also have seen and heard of many cases of redtail cats getting it. In fact my RTC X TSN had the early signs of it when s/he was real small, I just upded the water changes and put in some extra air stones and eventually it went away. But I caught it real early when it was just a protruding membrane (the thin clear flap just under the gill plate) and not the gill plate it's self. I have heard of ppl messaging an early gill girl back down with they're thumb, and eventually if it does not retract you will need to trim it back.
