I have been thinking about building a large plywood and glass aquarium this summer. I will have the time and at this point have saved a little over $800 for the tank (aiming for $1500 by summer) and I have been planning on an arowana as a main inhabitant.

Initially, it was going to be a 180, then along with the plans for a silver came a 3 foot width requirement, so it morphed to a 6'x3'x2', but after additional research came a 8 foot long design so that ended up at about 350 gallons.

If you read the above you know that I am going with a 8'x3'x2' tank and I want an arowana. But after reading up even more on silvers, I noticed that they tend to lose their color as they get rather large. DE also seems to be a major problem (from photos, it doesn't really bother me though). After looking at other options, I came across a few photos of Jardini arowanas. I love the coloration of the fins and the overall look of the fish, but they seem to get bad reputations for eating anything they can get their mouth around.

The queastion, can I keep more than one Jardini in a tank? And can I keep other fish (like Ornate Bichirs or maybe a small catfish)?

I do not like the idea of two $100 fish killing each other, I just can't afford such a thing. Also, could a silver be kept with a Jardini? Surely a 2' fish would not pick on a 3' fish.

I knew they were aggressive, that's why I asked.

might work depends on fish personality

In my experience, Jardini Arowanas are the most aggressive fish I've kept. I've been keeping fish for close to two decades now. I had one for a long time in a 200 gallon with all sorts of tank mates. He would do alright at first, but once he recognized the other fish as a competitor for food, he killed them.

I was able to keep him with clown loaches (he'll eat ones too small though) and some bichirs. I also had a big fire eel that he ignored. You'll want to stay away from mid to top level fish, and ones that are slightly aggressive.

My jardini didn't mind small catfish. But he hated my marbled goby and red tail catfish.

Silver and Black arowanas aren't even compared to Jardini in the aggressive department. So if you wanted a tank with a few big fish in it, I'd go with one of them to be sure. Going the Jardini path, you may end up with a tank with only a handful of fish in it.

Whichever style you like really, it's up to you.

but if you end up choosing a jardini look at leichardis intead.

If you wanted something like a Jar, get a leicharti aro. They look almost the same.

For me, the best arowana going is a silver. My last had a killer instinct and much personality (for an arowana). Also, there is something to be said about their graceful swimming technique. Choose the one you like most however, because hopefuly you will have it for a very long time.

Oh yeah, make sure to cover the tank well. This is how I lost mine.

Good Luck.

Silver aro will get drop eye for sure, and maybe gill curl when he gets bigger, I had a jar and a silver together for a day, they were fine but I didn't trust em an didn't have time to watch em so I left em seperate. If u wanna have more then one jar u need at least , 3, 5, or 7, odd numbers supposedly works. I like silvers but jars seem to do better in tanks. Silvers are alot more jumpy, I mean out of ur tank jumpy, and more easily spooked from my experiance, I felt slack keepin mine in a tank so he's in a pond now they get alot bigger than any other aro.
