i cut the sharp bit on the tail off and the tip of the head
shell is good for them for colour, also they tend to like it more as it looks alive rather than just meat, i find they attack it more.
the tail is soft, you can easily bend it with your hands, it will not puncture.
on the tail there is a small sharp bit, that is the one i remove
