Which fish have you had success keeping with festaes?

Right now he's only 3 inches and in with an 8 inch oscar, 6 inch JD, 6 inch loisellei, and a little GT and firemouth. I might also add my small salvini to the tank. Oh, also some bichirs and catifsh, including a clarias and lima. And a papyrocranus afer and a marbled swamp eel.

I gather they get much nastier as they grow, and at 3 inches he's becoming more aggressive. More than my 6 inch loisellei actually. I'm just wondering if there are some species they are more tolerant of than others, species they tend to get on with and not so I can plan ahead of time.

Just like with every other Cichlid; it varies from fish to fish. Most other large Cichlids will do. The only way to tell is try, wait, and see.

I kept my festae pair in a 125 with about 4-6 female cons for up to around 3 years or so. the female cons were quick enough to get away and small enough to get into some hiding places where the larger festae pair couldn't get to them. the festae pair I had though was rather docile compared to the reputation the species has.

so, ultimately I'd agree that you won't be able to keep much of anything with them unless you have an enormous tank and even then it's still iffy. :)

My festae pair tolerated a male jaguar for about 6 months. The jag was doing fine, then oneday the male festae snapped and took the jag out in a matter of minutes. This was in a 125 gallon tank. The male festae was 6" TL and the jag was 4" TL.

Mine used to live with large oscars, but I moved him when he hit three inches. He's now about 4" and lives fairly peacefully with My Midas/RD cross in a large tank...seperated by a divider much like the one in quattroatl's avatar.

My Festae pair have lived with a variety of different fish in their 230 gal. They have been quite docile until the male snapped when he hit about 11 inches and killed 7 silverdollars in a matter of minutes. The pair now lives alone and get's along very well together. The male is 'bout 16 inches and the female 'bout 10. They are six years old.
