I got some Java fern plants from prepackaged in a plastic container at a store, I opened it and some of the plant were just leaves separated from their rhizome. Will they grow roots or will they just die and rot?

"more than likely die"

so I should I just remove it then?

Whenever leaves break off at the rhizome I just stick them back into the piece of wood the rest of the plant is in. They at least stay alive and possibly sprout new rhizomes just like attached leaves.

Yea, I have a leaf..that has new shoots coming out from it, looks strange.

I know for certain it can grow back with just a rhizome... I got a java fern eaten to nothingness (Only the rhizome remained) ... and it is now sprouting a few new leaves. (I moved it to my other tank and protected it from predators via divider) AND I only have 0.6 WPG with no ferts/CO2 nothing.

It is amazing, the toughness of these things.

It will grow back but it takes a very long time. I had a single leaf detached from my plants and I tied it on a piece of wood.. it took 2 months to form roots and one more for a single leaf to grow. Maybe its my water?

OH PS: sometimes a detetched leaf forms a daughter plant under it instead of actually using the whole leaf.

ahh, thanks guys :)
