why

is it turning brown and mushy? or turning brown, but holding its shape?

speaking from my experience, mature java ferns that turn brown but maintain their leaf shape are normal, and eventually new java fern plantlets will grow on the dying leaf

but when they turn brown and just rot to mush, then there is a problem . . . could be your water, could be your light, lack of nutrients, etc.

do you have them planted in the substrate, attached to something, or free-floating?

Attached to rock, roots exposed. Tried ferts and adjusted lighting. Could it be my actint (sp - blue light) causing the problem?

"attached to rocks, roots exposed" . . . great! while java fern will grow even when planted in the substrate, common wisdom is to keep the roots exposed

however, from what I understand, blue actinic doesn't do anything for java fern, or for aquatic plants in general . . . my setups use mainly 6700K plant lighting, although on my 90G it is a mix of about 70% 6700K, 30% colormax

I don't know that blue actinic hurts, but it doesn't help . . . what is your specific lighting set-up? what bulbs, how many watts?

Are you adding any supplements for the plants? I had been using some for my tank and after some time I noticed the Java Ferns started turning mushy brown. This just happened recently, so I stopped using it (Seachem) and I'm just waiting to see if the plants recover. My other plants (anubias, corkscrew vals, crypts) are doing just fine.

Actinics will grow algae in a Freshwater planted tank. It'd be best to swap them out for something in the daylight spectrum.
