I am thinking of adding java moss to my tanks to help with nitrates. My tap water has between 5-10ppm so I am doing a lot of water changes to keep my nitrates in check. Other than growing fast is there any reason not to use it and is there anything that eats it?

Your tank will literally have no room for the fish to swim if this is your plan. Moss isn't normally known for it's nitrate absorbing abilities.

Fast growing plants include hygrophylia, cabomba, bacopa, anachris, duckweed (and other floating plants), and wysteria (there's others, but that's a good search start).

:iagree: the moss wont even make a dent in your nitrates. what are the nitrates in your tank? as long as you do regular water changes, the nitrate levels will usually be ok for most fish

Nitrates are between 20 and 40 but I am doing wc 2-3 times a week. I have a 50 gallon with a 10" jag

I have one fish in the 50 gal as stated earlier he eats 4 large pellets twice a day never leaves any. My tap water starts with 10ppm that is part of my problem.

your problem is u have a jag in a 55 bro they need atleast 75 gal minimum and thats the lowest amount of water volume recommened means youd have to change the water 2 or 3 time a week to just keep the nitrates down to a decent amount and thats witha 75 let alone 55 your fighting a losing battle the jag is only getting bigger with more of a bioload

He is going back in the 125 when I get it resealed this week. Makes sense I will just keep going with the wc until it's backup. Thanks
