My JD is acting very weird. I was on vacation for about 4 months and my brothers were taking care of my fish and over the time I was gone they said he would jolt off and bump in to things. Now that I'm back I can see what they mean. He has a giant pot that he is usally in, but before I left he was always out and about. He has always been the most dominant.

He is in a 55 gallon with a Firemouth and a pleco. There used to be a pink convict. But my step father dumped his african cichlids in my tank while he moved his and they beat up the convict. He is in a different tank recooperating.

Just now he poked his head out of his pot and I turned to look at him and he jolted and smacked against the glass. I'm not sure what to do about this.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

what are the water parameters?
I am not sure.. They said they haven't done any water changes, they've just been adding water when it gets low. And there is tons of moss on everything which has never happened before, I planned on changing the water today.

Could that be whats causing this?

Change the water and see if he improves. No waterchanges for 4 months isn't good.

Yes. No water changes for 4 months can make him 'act like that'. That should've been the 1st thing you did when you got back and found out he hadn't had a water change in 4 months :-O Don't change too much too fast or you'll shock his system. I'd do about 20% a day for 3 or 4 days in a row then a 50% and then keep going until you get nitrates under 20 ppm. You need a test kit though. It always floors me how so many people have fish and no test kit. Isn't that sort of like taking a long car ride with no gas gauge? Sorry. Not trying to be rude but ....does anyone own a test kit?
