This LFS had a 7'' JD in w/ a school of exos. He kept charging through the school and eventually he got one. It was pretty amazing to watch, but I felt kind of bad for the exos. I have thought about mixing exos w/ smaller CA cichlids though. Has anyone ever had luck with this?

As in Exodon? Aren't those supposed to be mini-pirahna, except a tad more aggressive?

Whenever I've seen them feed they go insane, quite the fish, I was always to afraid to mix them with anything, but I guess now that I think of it, I've heard of people using them as dithers before...

That's pretty cool. However, one or the other is going to end up getting mauled. Don't use the LFS as a role model.

If the Exodons sensed weakness or sickness in a tank mate would they try to eat it? I honestly like Exos and would love to have a species tank for them. I just assumed that having them mixed with anything else would lead to problems if the other fish were sick or wounded. Is that true?

youre best sticking with a species only tank.
if you plan to do a proper biotope, there are a few other species that can be kept with exodons (as they are in the wild), however this will take some planning. even then, the chances of long term success are not very high.
they dont only attack when they sense weakness or sickness. even if every fish in the tank is healthy, they will constantly chance and nip eachother. and if you miss a couple of feedings, you can count on coming home to a few dead fish.

That and always nipping at things is what I kind of assumed about Exodons, BUT a lot of people have assumptions about pirahna, and they are no where near as aggressive as most would have you believe. So I may be wrong about Exodon's personality, but I just don't want to mix them and find out I'm right :(

That is what I have heard, but if they are well fed wouldn't they be ok w/ tough small cichlids like cons?

I had a trio of exodons in my cichlid tank. I didnt know much about them when i got them and the guy at the store told me they would be fine. The trio left all of my cichlids alone and were fine but killed my 8" tinfoil barb and all of my spanner barbs. Dam scale eaters!
