Lets make this a thread for those who dont know much about crossing of those 3 morphs and the real JD.
I was thinking if anybody could make a punnett square, not the simple one, but the dihybrid cross one.
See here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punnet_square

I would make a square myself if i knew more about the jd's.

And as a start:
JD=Jack Dempsey
EBJD=Electric Blue Jack Dempsey
BGJD=Blue Gene Jack Dempsey
GJD=Gold Jack Dempsey

'Het' is short for heterogeneous... an animal that is Het for a trait, does not display that trait itself, but has the genetic potenital to have offspring that displays that trait...

Thus "Blue Gene Dempseys" are actually "Het for Blue"...

"Blue Gene" is a term created by hobbyists that is not consistent with the science of breeding. If we use terms that are consistent with the science of breeding we will have a much easier time researching the topic. It will also allow us to discuss breeding with breeders of other types of animals.

Thus I highly promote the term "Het for Blue" in place of "Blue Gene"...

Homogeneous is a term to describe an animal that displays a specific trait. But if you call my Blue Dempseys homos I'll be quite upset ;)

That would make a great Sig!!!!!!!!:ROFL:

This all assumes that both Gold and EB traits can be inherited and expressed independently. This is yet to be proven with adult fish, but there is a guy selling small ones - need to see what they look like as adults.

Punnet Square like this?

This would be the Gold x EB base cross:

This would be to 2nd generation cross of siblings from the first cross:

Thanks a lot nutcase and auratum.

Is there any conclusive proof yet that EBJD's aren't at least partial hybrids?
wasnt genetic testing done that proved it wasnt?

When we start breaking down these percentages... we should keep in mind this does not mean that (for example) Blue x Het for Blue results in 50% Blue... it means in Blue x Het for Blue offspring there is a 50% chance in being Blue applied to each offspring.

When dealing with creatures (such as Dempseys) that have many many offspring per brood, and when dealing with a mix that results in either A or B (Blue or Het for Blue for example)... it's fairly safe to say half will be Blue & half will be Het for Blue.

But... (there's always a but isn't there)...

When we start dealing with the complexities suggested in Auratum's second chart... phew... The chart is accurate, but there is a lot of 'averaging' going on. There are no promises that it will be evenly distributed as displayed in that chart.

Making a chart for Blue & Gold x Blue... or Blue & Gold x Gold... will be fairly simple and reliable despite the averaging...

But if you want charts to display a Blue & Gold x Blue & Het for Gold... or any other such combination... I think the averaging may get a bit out of control to the point of being misleading...

The Odds are predictable... but where the odds play out is still random...
