i have a 30 gallon with 1 jd 4.5 1n. and a breeding pair of convicts 3 and 4in.. before doing my weekly 30% water change today i checked the water, and the ph has droped from around7.0 to 6.1 since last week. the convicts dont seem affected, but the jack is sitting on the bottom with his left pectoral fin clamped to his side. all other water stats are normal. temp around 78 deg. the fin dose not look damaged at all. could it just be the ph drop?

The water conditions can certainly account for clamping. The sudden pH drop could indicate high nitrates; did you check that also?

both of those species are very hardy and there are reports of jack dempseys surviving temps over 90F! it could also be the aggressive nature of the cons! in a 30 all other fish besides the breeding pair will be put in to a corner!

so any sudden water changes can do it! sometimes fungus!
