My jds spawned the other day but I have never raised cichlid fry before. What do I feed them and how do I take care of them?

Unless you have some extra space and a need for this batch of fry, I would leave them be with the parents. If you let the parents raise the fry for a little while, I feel they get better at it each time the spawn. They will feed on whatever they can. Some finely ground up flakes will work too when they are free swimming.

I would like to sell them. If I leave them they will be eaten very quickly. They're just starting to swim.

I have had Jd's in the past and they were very good parents. Mom will crush up her food for them and Dad will defend them from anything and so will mom.

Dad was kicked out a couple days ago. Mom is the only one protecting them, and she is doing a very good job. But once they start swimming away from the nest, they'll get eaten. I must have around 200-250 fry.

when they swim away, she goes and gets them and brings them back to the swarm of fry and spits them out.....at least i hope she is and not eating them!!!!!!

She may look like she is eating them , but mom will show this behavior all day and night, but she is moving them back and forth, keeping them in line per say... At least thats what my feale JD did with her fry.

I know she isnt eating them. I watch her bring them back and spit them out. I'm saying that if they swim to far away, the other fish in the tank will eat them.

I used to feed mine baby brine shrimp (live or frozen/thawed) and crushed flake or pellet.

Agreed with others, my JD's were very good parents.

Well, we just divided the tank. Mom has the entire right 2' of the tank. So baby brine shrimp and crushed pellets are good foods?
