How long can the fry be kept with their parents for? This is the first time I have had JD's. I have had them 2 weeks and they have bred already and the fry are now 6 days old and free swimming. I breed convicts for feeders for my larger fish and move the fry into a growout tank to get a little size onto them as the parents tank is only small. But the JD's tank is a 4foot tank and big enough for the fry to grow. Do the fry get to a certain size before the parents get nasty and decide to eat them??

I feel they are too good of a fish to use as feeders and hope to be able to get rid of them in other ways.

I'd say 2-3 weeks tops and they should be moved. If you see the parents eating some, move them right away. Also, if you wanna get rid of fry try selling them to your LFS.

I've had a Jack pair for about 4 years... and their behavior was exceedingly odd.

Their first spawn were free-swimming when the pair spawed a second time. The first spawn ate the second batch of eggs as the parents continued to defend their fry. A month or so later, the pair spawned again... and again, the fry ate the eggs while the parents just stood by.

In the long run... I ended up with 25 or 30 Jacks of sellable size... some went to the LFS and I gave the rest away on craigslist. The Jacks have never spawned again... and I don't mind a bit.

I have had problems of the fry nipping at the parents fins if left too long. This happened both with my RDs and convicts.

Good luck on raising them

It all seems like they can just give u mixed turnouts then really. I guess I'll just take it as it comes and do what I have to when the time comes. It doesn't make things any easier that u can't sell them here either.
