jd/gr tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it depends how big they are and what size tank. my gt is a totall badass

I kept a JD with a GT for a while, and everything was fine until they were both about 6" . . . then it got ugly, with the GT getting the worst of it . . . no actual damage was done, but the GT started to spend more and more time just hiding, not coming out to swim or feed or anything.

he was a beauty, too . . . which was good, because I got decent $$$ when I traded him in at my LFS

this was in a 90-gallon tank, and other than a male convict they were the only cichlids in the tank . . .

I've told several times how my GT killed my 2 oscars and JD. He was about 4 or 5 in then, and the smallest of the four. Actually the albino oscar survived and died a few days later, as did the JD.

I recently tried keeping him in one of my 125g with my green texas, that didn't work either. I think the texas got the better of him, but the GT seemed to be starting the trouble.

I have mixed several JDs & GTs... my consistent experience has been a male of each will not do well at all... mixing a male of one with a female of the other or mixing two females works fine...

I believe they are to distantly related to hybridize… and I have never had the two species attempt to breed… just to mention…

I would not expect a pair of each to work long term unless they were in a tank large enough to not see/interact with each other...

My experience says that it really depends on the two fish. Both fish can be aggressive and timid. GT seem to be more aggressive more times than not and JDs tend to be defensive most of the time. But I have seen a mixture.

IF you start having some issues you might consider getting dithers.
