How big should I honestly expect? I ws hoping for 10"+ but I see they are normally much smaller.

Any owners want to comment on this?

if its a male and he is kept in good conditions then he def get to about 10" though more than that would be extremely rare, and it will probably take him about 2yrs to reach that, my male that i had grew to 5in in about as many months in my 120g, he wasn't the fastest growing fish i had but he was one of the larger fish in the tank before i rehomed him

Yeah males will reach 10" with a good diet and plenty of water changes. Most females will reach 6"-8".

Sarah88 when did you get rid of your JD?

i got rid of him like a month ago, i needed to make room for my long term stock and he was just a fish i got from a friend, i never really had JD on my idea of a final stocklist so he was one of the grow outs to go, though he was gorgeous...

Awsome thanks

10-12" for a male is very normal. But they do grow slow after the first year. Most just don't keep them long enough to see there full size. And it maybe because domestic strains have too much inbreeding or something. Not sure but 15-20 yrs ago it was more common to see them over 10"

My male is at 7" counting the tail, got him 9 months ago at 1.75". He still doesn't look all that large to me, but the ruler doesn't lie. People that haven't been by the house in awhile are the ones that remind me how much he's grown. Plus I have a few pics of him after the first month they're also a good reminder of the growth. And Sarah88 did have a beautiful male!

I feel this way about my Oscar some days he looks small, other days he looks normal. However every time someone comes they either say he is big or he has grown alot.

I have to agree, people don't usually keep them until they are full grown for some reason. I have seen some 10" JD. They are beautiful fish full grown. I once saw a 12" JD in a show tank at the fish store and it was goegrous.
