I plan on moving my mated pair of JD's from their current 120gallon to a 60gallon, 30"x31"x15" (LxWxH). Question is I plan on just using 2 sponge filters rated for 125gallon each and 2 koralia 1 power heads, would this be fine with them? I'd be doing weekly or bi weekly water changes on the tank.

a 15" x 30" foot print is pretty tight for a pair of Dempseys...

I keep mine in 48" x 18" tanks... When kept in smaller tanks they often develope a hump back...

The info provided says 30" X 31" footprint, not 30" X 15". That's actually a larger footprint then 48" X 18".

Very questionable wether the bent backs of some JD's is due to them being kept in small tanks. I've seen JD in the past with bent backs that were kept and raised in large tanks. The thought of many, is that a bent back is related to nutritional defecientcies. The poor genetics of mass produced JD as well as WATER QUALITY. There is eveidence from aquaculture that water quality can have something to do with nutrient absorption and thus is connected to nutritional defeciencies. So I guess in a round about way, If a small tank means poor water quality, (and you happen to get a JD genetically inclined to get a nutritional defeciency), then I guess you can blame the small tank for the bent back.

IMO, you can always more then make up for a lack of filtration with more water change, but you can never make up for a lack of water change with more filtration. As long as you have suffecient biological filtration, then it will be fine and since your going with 2 sponge filters both rated for tanks double the size of yours, i really can't see how you could have a problem with it.

Yes the tank is almost square in shape, but if push comes to shove I will invest in a FX5 for the tank, but just don't want to go that route unless I have to since they do lay eggs and so far all the fry have gotten sucked into a filter. A single intake will be easier to fry proof than the current dual overflows. I was more worried about the filtration and water movement for them and not the size of the tank.

Thanks BC in SK, I currently have both the sponge filters in their current tank so they should be seeded nicely by now! :)

Got the stand built today, and started painting parts of the tank! Will hopefully have the tank and other tanks moved this weekend if I can find help, haha!
