can a JD live conforabtly in a 45? i might be getting one froma neighbor who's thinking of getting rid of his. it's free and comes with a pleco so i really want to get but don't know what to put in it.
would a female GT work?

im not sure illhave to see my neighbor tomarrow.
my mom told me they were getting rid of teh tank and not the brightest bulb in the box. i have no clue what kind of tank it is (box bowfront hex) 45 is a pretty unsual size tank.

I'd say no IMO

JD's like many other medium sized cichlids spend most of their time in the bottom half of the tank. At least thats what I've observed. SO... a long, shallow tank would be better suited for this type of fish than a tall, narrow one.

Personnaly I'd never put a jack in anything smaller that 55 but preferably 75. the JD I have loves to cruise end to end in the bottom foot of the tank.

how big is the JD right now? You might be OK until you can get a suitable tank if its a juvenile

if the footprint is a wider tank, rather than a longer tank, such as for example 36"x18", than it would be fine, but in a oddly shaped tank, it changes it, hexagon and oddly shaped tanks, do not offer good swimming room at all.

dimensions aer same lenght as a 75 i believe and a jd would be fine in a 45 by itself..

it's definately going to be by itself.
i haven't bout it yet, i've just noticed they are selling really cheap right now around me and when i heard that my neighbor might be giving away his tank. i'm like "JACKPOT!"
i haven't seen the tank yet so i dont know how big or what shape it is, all i know is that it's supposedly a 45 gal.
if/when i buy it it will be a juvi, about 2-3"

If it's a 45 tall which most 45's are then no because of the footprint. If has a 36x18 footprint then its good to go but not the best for it. If he gets over 8" to 9 get a bigger tank hes going to need it. You can just imagine a 9" fish is kinda cramped in such a short tank.
