I have a single female Jack Dempsey and do not want to put her in my larger tank. I have two empty 55 gallons, one is 4 feet long but only 12 inch wide and the other one is 3 feet long but wider, 18 I think.

Considering that a female is smaller than a male, maybe 8 inches max, would she be able to turn around in a 12 inch wide tank. Wich would be the best tank for her, long or wide.

She is presently a baby, only 3 inches.

I think a 55gallon will be fine for a female JD.

Technically either will work fine. Usually length is great for mixing semi aggressive cichlids so they can each stake out their own sides of the tank.

In this situation IMO either would do fine for a JD by himself.
