My JD is about two years old now, but still only 5"(being generous!)

I know they are slow growers, but come on! I'm starting to think this is as big as it will get. I see 8" JD's that have been traded into the LFS that are as old as my fish.

The JD has always lived in a 75 gallon tank, same foods as the rest of my fish (Hakari, ON, Omega One, worms, krill, shrimp, etc.) and I do WC's of 50% or more once a week.

I've heard about genetically small JD's, and I'm starting to think I've got one.:(

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice fish, but I want a large JD.

So, given more time will it grow? Or do I have a runt.

you could just have a "runt" or a smaller jack. Fish are like people too...they come in all different shapes and sizes. I would think its a big as its going to get after 2 years. Just 2 cents worth.

By the way, is it a male or a female? That will determine size as well.

I was pointing out the other day that my fastest growing fish are my jd's out of my growouts oscar, jags, red devil the jd's have put on an ubelievable 2 1/2 inches in the last month and a half. The only thing i can think of is that they are in a 125 and Ifeed about 14 different types of foods from frozen to pellets and esp crazy about clean water. If you want a big jd you should go and buy 5 as growouts and pick the largest one they are 99 cents around here.I think you do have a runt.

I think thats pretty cool though. Something to laugh at. Neat oddball

Some fish are just born with more potential than others... there are also a lot of things a breeder can do (or not do) that will affect the "genetics" of their offspring. I have had 2 year old Demseys that are 8"+ and others that are 5"...

Just like I've had JDs that are exceptionally colorful and others that are pale... or some that are aggressive and some that are pansies... or some that hide constantly and others that beg constantly...

Ya gotta love individuality...

My JD is 4 inches and at least 2 years old. I feed cichlid pellets and flakes and earthworms and it just won't grow either. I think mine may be a female though.

I got my JD a little over a year ago, he's gone from 1" to around 5" during that time. All the fish he was larger than (RD, Os and FH) have left him in the dust and he's now one of my small cichlids. Some JDs just grow faster than others.
