If i were going to do it , I would add Convicts. OR a Texas.

But thats just me. I have my Breeding pair in a 55 with one chinese Algae eater.

this tank is a 40 breeder and it has a bigger footprint than a 4 foot 55...

Yeah you could put one in there. Quite a few choices that could go with them but considering the tank is smaller I would go with like convicts or sajicas or somthing smaller along that line.

could I put a pair of convicts in there too add a consant supply of feeders? Or will they most likely try to kill the JD?

You could try a pair of convicts but the JD would have to be pretty big to be able to stand up to them, but still it would be 2 against one. Convicts may be small but have a lot of heart and will protect their young at all costs.

IMO, due to the similaritys in color of the JD and texas, if you end up with two males you would have issues in that small of a tank, also if you end up with a male and female you my end up having hybrids and I don't know if that is your thing or not.
