I was looking at getting a gulper for my 55 but can't find them anywhere and with my work can't really order one online. How would a mated pair of jds be in a 55?

Would work fine, the only negative I've heard of is that they can sometimes develop hunched backs; but this isn't set in stone, or have enough evidence to prove.

Hunched back? Never heard of that I had a few several years ago and never had a problem. What causes that?

The so called "hunched back" feature is a predisposed genetic trait that some JD's display well into adulthood. Tank size does not have any effect on this. This is usually something that you see in large/old JD's (even ones in large tanks). That being said, a pair of JD's in a 55G should suffice for a while (1-2 years). However, if the male JD reaches 10", the 55G will no longer be a suitable size tank.

Thank don't make sense to me 2 10" fish by itself in a 48"x12"x20" isn't big enough?
Correct. A 12" deep tank shouldn't house anything that's 10+ inches. This only provides 1-2" to turn around. You'll find that most members on MFK will agree with this.

I used to agree, until my 6 in JD beat the crap out of my EBJD and bleekeri in my 55. Once you see a truly full grown JD you'll understand how a 55 isn't enough.

Make no mistake, JD's can (and do) become large/thick fish. Below is a picture of a 10" male I used to have named "Jax". He and a couple of smaller CA's easily filled out one of my 75G tanks. He would have been miserable in a 55G at that size.
