i have my jack dempsey in a 30gallon tank but hes only like 4inchs and not very agressive the guy at the store said he has 2 Jds in a 40 gal and that bc mine is small i could put another in the tank and be ok for a yr or two anyone no if thats true

The one may be fine for a little while, but two will probably get overly aggressive in such a small tank. The best rule of thumb is to buy a tank large enough for the fish you want before you buy the fish.
I have one in a 55, sometimes that seems too small. If I were you I definitely wouldn't put another JD in a 30 gal.
