Hi i saw some jellybean cichlid at the lfs today. i wanted one but wanted a pair. Are they fertile? They are the one that look kinda like convict but round. Also there are blood parrots and dye parrots in there too, are these fish just parrots with better shape? And plus i heard that female parrot are fertile and male are infertile; is this the same as jellybean?

:screwy:

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, yes, the jellybean cichlid is nothing more than a dyed up blood parrot. And yes, the dye will eventually wear off.

I'd recommend you to not buy any dyed fish as it is quite a painful method they use to dye them, and quite inhumane.

The male parrot is 99% infertile, there have been, supposedly, some cases of male fertility. The female parrot is mostly fertile. My old blood parrot had a shape like a convict as well, not a significant hump back. Some are just shaped differently, and different qualities between them.

I have done some reading and supposedly jelly bean convict are different from jelly bean parrot. Might not be a good site but it says jelly bean convict are as prolific as convicts. Can anyone verify that this is true? Anyone have any experience with these Jellybean convict?

Yea, I've seen the site as well. By the looks of it, it's going to be the same story as the jellybean BP, dyed.

By the looks, and from what I've read they aren't as deformed as the BP however, and live much healthier lives, but stay relatively small for a CA cichlid. Apparently it's a cross between a female BP and a male Con, or a female Con and a Hormone injected male BP.

Go for it, but stay away from the dyed fish.

as far as i know there is 2 types of jellybeans. if they are blood parrot (usually blue, purple, yellow, dark red, or tattooed) looking then they will more then likely not produce any frys. if they look like tiny fat pink convicts then these will breed very easy just like regular convicts. sometimes the convict variation are referred to as short body convicts.

hey i think the jellys your talkin about are jellybean convicts which are pretty much just dwarf pink cons they act and look the same except there shorter and fatter

I was a little confused to about blood parrots/jelly bean parrots too. The parrots I got are the convict type sold as jelly bean parrots. Purchased 3 of them about a week ago and already 2 have paired up and laid about 100 eggs.
