So I ended up with a Jewel cichlid as far as I can tell, now I dont know what to put in the tank with it. The jewel is about 2" long in a 55g. Right now he is with a Pleco thats about 2" as well.

I am planning on picking up something this afternoon to put in with him and need some suggestions. 1 or 2 fish today, I am moving in 2 months so once I do that I will pick up more, I just dont want the jewel to be alone for all that time and I figure its easier to move 3-4 fish in 2 months and then get more later rather than move 10 or so.

I have never had a jewel before, and from reading up they seem pretty aggressive. I am really looking for something that stays in the same size range as the jewel 5-6" maybe.

Thanks for any help.

So I didnt go to get anything last night, I will be going next weekend I beleive. If anyone has suggestions on what to keep with the Jewel? Maybe another few jewels if I can find them and something else maybe?

Does anyone know how bala sharks or something like that would do with them?

I have a 6" Jewel Cichlid in a 55g with 2 Jack Depsey's(4") and Krib(3") a Rafael Catfish(3") and a 5" Pleco, i do not suggest keeping 2 Jack Dempseys in there though theres alot of agression between them but definetly look into Kribs.

What is a Krib?

I am still looking for suggestions for this...I am contemplating just getting some stuff from the assorted african's but I dont want them to be dominated by the jewel.

I have heard, JD, Jag's, I want something I can keep for a long time that wont outgrow the 55g, and something so I can have more than just 3 or 4 fish in there.

No "assorted Africans" with the jewels. Their water parameter requirements are different, and the jewels aren't really aggressive enough to compete with Mbunas.

You could certainly keep other jewels. You'll need to provide plenty of hiding places, as the jewels will become VERY aggressive once their pair off.

"Kribs" are Pelvicachromis pulcher. They are another African riverine species. The females become absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, developing a bright pink belly. Depending on colour morph, the males can be just as nice. Mine are as red as the females.

They aren't as big of bullies as the jewelies are, but will definitely stake out a claim when they spawn. Again, clay pots or caves make great hiding places and spawning places for both species.

I have found Jewels and 'assorted Africans' (electric yellows & blues, red zebras, aceii, maingano etc) to get on fine in the same tank, with the jewels trying to breed (eggs keep getting eaten) I have just stripped a red zebra from that tank of her fry, the other fish are still a bit small to breed, though that will happen soon I imagine.

Water conditions naturally for different types of fish may differ, but it depends on what conditions the actual fish have been bred in. Many fish bred in the same area have been raised in the same type of water conditions so providing temperament is not an issue combining fish with different requirements works fine in most cases. The most important thing is that water conditions remain stable.

The jewel is gone now...thanks for the replys though
