Ok i have 8 jewels in a 30 gallon ranging 2-4 inches they used to be really calm and now all they do is freak out with the slightest movement, they hide all the time, and practically explode off the walls when spooked. idk whats going on but the original 4 i had were fine, then they had babies, i have 4 babies about 2-3inch mixed with the original 4, does it have to do with the way i raised them ?also i havent had any of them territorial, only the parents when breeding. any ideas greatly appreciated

Check to make sure there isn't anything wrong with your electrical cords from a heater, filter etc.

Had a internal filter a while back that was old and the coating around the wire cracked somehow. Fish were skittish for about a day until I figured out what the problem was. Hope this helps.

Maybe your just a little overstocked and its the start of aggression that has them skiddish. Just a thought..???.....dgarrett

i checked all the electrical cords and they all seem fine, and dgarrett thats what i was thinking, but i cant see any agression at all in the tank just a bunch of scared cichlids :/

They'll definitely need hiding places. Strangely, the more hiding places they have, the less they'll hide, as they'll feel more comfortable.

From what I've read on Jewels they get more aggressive as they mature, I am finding the same with mine.

jewels supposed to be really aggressive, so eight in a 30 also might be pushing it. You
might have a dominant male exerting itself, terrifying all the rest, so they all become jumpy.

Me, I would put a whole bunch of plants and caves inside just so everyone have some sort of cover.

ok yeah there is a few caves but ill add a lot more crap in there and see how that goes thanks everyone
