In my quest for colorful fish for my poly tank, I began to wonder about the jewel cichlids. Are they too aggressive for the polys in a 72x18x19 (100 long)?

You can try it.Just get all males or all females this should avoid some agression-Anne

I have a Jewel with my Sen. bichir. It has been about six months with no problems. They don't even seem to acknowledge each other. The Jewel will move out of the bichirs way when it has to.

I have 2 pairs with my ornates and fronts. Works fine.

Jewels IME are only aggressive with fish that they see as a threat. Bottom dwellers like polys and most cats seem to do just fine with them.

Although my jewel has a problem with the convicts, it doenst even seem to acknowledge my senegal, so I think you should be fine.

Glad to hear it, that leaves me open for a couple more options for my tank.

Just be warned my friend, when Jewels breed they become hyper aggressive, or at least in my experiance. Basically the african equivalent of the convict!!

My jewels were fine with my bichirs... until I ended up with a pair. The pair started to go after everyone, including the bichirs (not as much as everyone else, but enough so that they had to go). So you can do it, and YMMV, but I had to pull them out of my bichir tank.

My bichir tank has become my african oddball tank now. I have added an elephant nose and an african knife witht he bichirs. I don't know that I will be attempting the jewels now.
