Don't mix them with Mbunas.
Even though they are African, they really do better in SA or CA tanks with plenty of room(they prefer similar water parameters to the SA/CA group). They will stand up to bigger fish although they will end up on the losing end of the battle sometimes.
Mbunas will tear them apart.

I wouldn't but a lot of hobbyist have done it, if for some reason you do add one add only a male, their breeding behavior is outlandishly aggressive..
got a red jewel in with mbunas since they were all 1", of course he has gotten outgrown but still very active and shows very proud colors. now mbunas are about 5-6", added a 2" blue spot jewel, all is well. luck? lots of hiding places? dont know, but it works and and for 3.99 who wouldnt want a splash of red in their cichlid tank
I just picked up two Jewels to complete my tank. There's one red and one blue jewel. At first there was aggression from the Mbuna, but they have all seemed to have calmed down for the most part. They look extra special under the right lights too. I guess it just depends on your fish.
