I read a lot about how aggressive these fish are once they pair up, and later have fry to protect. But how are they solo? Would it still be a disaster to have one of each in a 50g long?

I think it would be a disaster after a while. Jewels can be mean but are do-able; convict and salvini I think either of them could decide to kill the other two at any time.
I agree thoricthys would be much more likely to succeed, or nanoluteus. Not with the fish you mentioned though.
Or a 50 would be a good tank for a pair of convict, or jewels, or salvini (maybe)
just not all together, in my opinion

I do like the listed replies, but I'm going to advise differently.
Keeping the three noted cichlids together is very possible if the OP constructs a suitable hardscape. I'd suggest an all male tank, stock them as juveniles and at the same time.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I was having a hard time imagining getting bored with a 50 gallon with just 2 fish of 1 species in it. Are we saying firemouths would do well with a jewel or convict? Or still solo?

A group of Firemouth Cichlid and you could add livebearer or a group of Tetra.

Group of firemouths will be more fun to keep IMO, you can watch the famous thoricthys flaring they do at each other, they constantly put on a little show but never really turn violent. I have a group of thoricthys pasionis in a 55, and they are very entertaining! more so than most CA cichlids I have kept. I wouldn't put one with the convict; convict likely to beat it up. But a group of 4 firemouths would probably work out

Or, if you don't think you can stand having one species in the tank, I would go for African mbuna. You could get a variety of those. This tank isn't really big enough for a community of CA cichlids of many different species. Could probably do 2 species of CA with some luck, but they would have to be the more docile ones (not the three you mentioned) for it to work long-term, I believe
