Hi everyone, I just had my lfs order me a new pike for this Wednesday but the only thing that she could tell me was that it was called a jewel pike. Does anyone know what this is and what I can expect? I know the supplier (Coast Tropicals) has strigata & lents on their website, but she also gets belly crawler. So, those were my choices, I already had a belly crawler, it was on one of my previous posts, died of ich right after the picture was taken. Thanks in advance. I will post pics after I get it.

Probably either Crenicichla saxatilis, anthurus, or some other Saxatilis group pike. Great fish, but with common names, you never know what you are going to end up getting till they show up. I'd have them order you a group if you can afford it.

As for having strigata on their list, most likely its actually sp. 'venezuela', so I'd avoid that unless you don't mind a fairly unattractive pike as an adult.

With a name like that, I'd expect one of the highly spangled sax types like menezesi, but like Peanut said with common names who knows for sure.

Thanks Darth, you guys are what got me into pikes. How large do they get, she told me 12"-14" but sometimes people at the lfs understate sizes. Don't worry I tell my customers what they can really expect when the come to my store.:nilly:

The picture is indeed of sp. 'venezuela', young, subadult, and adult. With them you can easily expect 14".

With the Saxatilis group pikes, you can normally expect them to max out around 10", with some smaller around 8" and others around 12". Just depends on the species. Definitely a lot smaller and less "robust" when compared to the Lugubris pikes.

Ok so they didn't come in this week but I did talk to the supplier (Coast Tropicals in Gardena CA) and they told me that they do have lents (what they call red pike), belly crawlers & strigs. Has anyone ever heard of this company's quality, are they just pulling my leg or what? On a side note I just picked up 2 midas cichlids, thanks KenC56. I thought that the youtube video of Juggernaut was just showing a small flowerpot. He was HUUUUGE. I can't wait until these guys get some size.

Around here 'red pike' is used for johanna, not lents ... so I'd be a bit wary without seeing pics.
