I have a pair of Jewels in a 30 gallon tank, hope to move them into a 55 gallon later on. I am trying to figure out what would be a good tankmate for them. Should I stay with all Jewels or are there any relatively small Africans (5-6 inches) that I could put in with them. I probably won't get many more fish in the 30, but I would like to have a good group in the 55. I have been researching mbunas and peacocks. From my reading, peacocks sound like the better choice. I will put up pictures when I get to a decent computer. Any suggestions?

They kill Africans (there not from lakes like most Africans) I know from experience! They actually do better with larger SA cichlids!

The people at lfs are trying to tell me that I can only put Africans with them. I didn't think that sounded right. I had jewels in a mixed tank before. Maybe a Jack Dempsey? The convicts are another idea I was thinking about for when I can get a 55. I have a 14 inch Jaguar hybrid and my brother has a grouper in his salt water tank. I was thinking that convicts might make good feeders? I would prefer to stay with central and south american cichlids. I really don't know that much about Africans. I just like the bright colors on the jewels.

I don't think this is a breeding pair, at least not yet. I started out with 4, and these are the 2 that are left. One has a very vivid red and the other is more of a pink. I did have one that had a lot of blue on it, but it died. The largest one I started with got killed in a territory dispute, along with a blue channel cat. They all were trying to claim the same tree stump ornament.

I have kept mine with both Africans and large SA cichlids, it really depends on the individual fish it seems. When I bred them, I moved the parents and fry to a 40g breeder until the fry was about an inch, then moved the parents back into the big tank.

How would they do with a Jack Dempsey? The two I have don't seem terribly aggressive, but they are by themselves. The behavior might change with tankmates.
