I'm Where I'm At
I'd like to buy some neclaces for me, my wife and kids

I've never really been a jewelry person, and have no idea where to get them

I'm skeptical about a lot of places, everytime I look at something, I think it's fake

My uncle had taken some jewelry he bought from Little Saigon in OC to pawn and they told him it was fake.

so where should I go to buy gold or white gold neclaces? Kay's, Zales, Helzberg? (I only mention these because I seen commercials) and what do you all recommend? 10k, 14k, 18k, 24k?

thanks all

I would suggest Jewelry Design Center. http://jewelrydesigncenter.com/

They are located in Spokane, WA -- but you might give them a call and see if they would ship or something?? I dunno - but by far the best jewelry store I have ever been to -- best selection, most unique pieces, highest quality, excellent customer service.

thank emily, i'll check it out and see where that goes

the only thing is, i'd prefer something local so i can go and see it myself and try it on and what not

Personally , I'm not a jewelry person myself either but I am a watch person... Get yourself a breitling watch and get your family the jewelry......I love my Asian peoples but I don't trust them when it comes to buying jewelry lol... Kevin Jewelers is pretty decent not overpriced like the other popular stores but if money is not an issue go for tiffanys , I'm sure your wife will thank you over and over again.. Try to get white gold, 18k preferably ..it holds value pretty good... Goodluck!

Just a few suggestions.....

I would find out what your wife prefers. What kind of jewelry does she have now- gold, white gold, silver? Does she like birthstones or natural stones? Maybe buy her a set, a necklace with earings or necklace and bracelet? Depending on what you are looking to spend there are varying sets. I've always used a local town jeweler with a great reputation. My family has used that jeweler for fixing watches and gifts for over 50 years. I would ask some of your friends or family who to use locally and stay away from online jewelry. You may also see ads running locally in the paper or tv, look for deals for Valentine's day.

If your kids like silver and or stones and such, you can usually find handmade jewelry stores around art galleries and trendy neighborhoods. If there is a up and coming area around you that is known for it's art and shops, I am sure you can find some great local handmade pieces in silver with natural and or birthstones. But depending on your wife's taste, she may like that style of jewelry better than a gold or silver piece found at a chain store jeweler.

I put way too much thought into that. :0

Go to a big name chain (Kayes for example) and ask for a discount. Jewelery is typically marked up 400-500%. I have a friend here that owns a store, so I know. For the kids, don't go softer than 10k. They will bend or break anything softer ie. 24k. Just my 2 cents.

Unless you are looking for something exotic or high end Macy's or Sears have decent selections. The stuff isn't top shelf but is' comparable to Zales but cheaper in the $500 or less range. The really nice stuff is usually in the smaller stores but if they get the hint that you don't know your stuff they may jack you.

If you can get to LA there is a Jewelry Exchange there. I've always had great luck with them.

For the kids you might want to look at something that is plated as those tend to be tougher than solid gold. Platinum will take abuse but it's really expensive.

thanks everyone for all the helpful hints and suggestions

now that i think about it, i think only my oldest daughter will get a neclace and maybe only a plated one. she's turning 5 in the spring

i have a watch and i'm not that into watches since i only need something to tell time which watches kind of became obsolete with me since pagers and cells came along. my wife got me a $500 Bulova (i think that's the brand) and i only wear it occasionally. i'd like to wear a necklace though, haven't worn one in a long time
