I'm starting with a 25 gal tank that I've cycled with 5 tiger barbs. I know it's a small tank and I'm talking the girl friend into a 75 gal or bigger. In the mean time I'd like something cool. What would happen if I put in one or two turquoise jewel cichlids? Maybe some convicts. I think I know already but would like to hear from people. Some sites say barbs are good dither fish? Also open to any other ideas on cichids that would work in a 25 that 36" long for a while.

I was gonna say it's a bad idea, but 36" long would be okay. I'd probably avoid the convicts until you've got something bigger. If you like cichlids, maybe try Kribensis?

The convicts are tough but their not the best to be mixing.

Jewels are beautiful but despite their size can be very agressive.
The jewels and barbs should do fine together

What about Rainbow Cichlids? They dont get too big and are pretty tame compared to some. I had a pair of Jewels and they were nutters, chased everything, had to rehome them in the end.
