I have this little guy I bought and was hoping someone could clear up the whole jing kang fader debacle for me. As you can see he is very small now and bright orange, eyes included with just a white spot in the center of the forehead. I have been told that jk's are faders. What does this mean for this one. I know his parents are father jing kang 100% orange with big kok and mother standard zz. They threw half orange fish and half zz looking fry. every now and then he gets bits of black streaking over the fins or his lips turn black sort of like blood parrots get and then after a few days he is back to normal. Should I expect him to change color scheme with age?

honestly it just looks like a rd/midas mix to me.
a jk has a red front area of the body and orangish middle to tail end. when fader fry are smaller, they're brown to black in color. as they age, that color goes away and the color that they fade into can be anywhere from yellow to red. yours appears to be fully faded and as it matures its pattern shouldn't change much, it should just intensify.

it does look like a Red Devil, not a JK. can you get us a photo of the "parents"?

Yeah when I saw them at the store I thought they were midas fry. Then I noticed the red dragon fry in the tank with them and it was explained to me their origin. The owner has no reason to bs me as he is a friend of mine and he's selling them for only $4.
I did not see the parents but he did and said he had never seen a fish quite like the father. Massive kok and solid orange without a speck of deviation in color and about 12". So prob just a midas? Does it make sense that they would produce half and half fry instead of a mixture of color in the genetics. Many of the orange ones did appear somwhat calico or blotchy with just orange and black. I got one of the only solid orange ones. I guess the black and orange ones could fade?
when you say rd/midas do you mean red dragon or red devil?
If it is a female I was hoping to breed it with my titanium. would this be possible?
thanks for all the help I will try and obtain a pic of the parents.

Sorry to bust ur bubble but what you have there is not a JK( in my John Wayne voice). I dont even think its FH nowhere in that fish. Its doesnt have any fin design, so im betting on RED DEVIL OR MIDAS!!!

Good pick up tho!!!!

full grown Midas looks really good as well (see pic below)... doesn't mean its a flowerhorn. could be a possiblity that the Midas bred w/ a RED DRAGON FH and you just purchased one of the offspring that has more midas traits.

whatever it is, its only $4. and its always fun to grow them out and see what they look like in a few months.

HE has orange eyes is that a typical midas trait? I am almost 100% that it is the offspring of a midas red dragon pair ie. not jk for sure but a mostly midas fh
