I really want to work in the aquarium industry part-time/casual... like maintenance service and retail.

Im not a big build but rather silm skinny build so heavy lifting of tanks delivery might not be suitable.
I applied for 2 LFS and they replied "times are tough and we're not too busy" :(

I have 7 yrs fish-keeping experience with an enthusiast knowledge of the hobby.

Can anyone help/share their experience?

Not sure what your aquascaping skills are like, but maybe you could try freelancing as a aquascaper for clients???

I know there are a few shops in Hong Kong that take on aquascaping jobs, and some of them get paid a fair amount of money to do it...

maybe make a flyer and put it at lfs for tank cleanings.

its difficult..... does it get below 40 degress there in the winter? You could start a farm. That's what I'm working on

lol i would love that, but from where im living the only thing i'll be harvesting is algae... the temperature fluctuate too much in my city.

im sure all melbournian can relate.

Yeah, that plus drought doesn't help... i remember when living in Sydney when droughts were bad, water limitations begin, and that can some times go for a few months...

But Melbourne is definitely no walk in the park with its 4 seasons in one day :)

blah 4 seasons, more like 5, blazing hot, freezing cold, mild, raining like all hail, then -5c
don't get me wrong, born in wereby:)
and yeah times are tough, maybe just try breeding something in a tank, personally i'm looking at breeding longfin bristlenose, once the tanks freed up, still got some con fry in it :)
in my area, lots of stores aren't doing that great.. try the industry a different way.

im 16 and i got a job at the lfs not because im a genius at fish or anything and im quite short and skinny and im also chinese so i can translate stuff. the only reason i got it is im young he pays me $8 an hour

Some other places you can look are at local universities and biological research facilities. Many of them are looking for qualified aquarists to help maintain their aquatics collections. They generally work with zebra fish and xenopus, but the quantities are sometimes huge. It is not uncommon to see collections with more than 100,000 animals.
