Has anyone bred these fish before?I currently have 7 of them and was wondering if any one has bred these in a community tank with other julies. They are in a 90 gallon with transcriptus, maleri and a breeding pair of ornatus.

I've kept and bred julidochromis dickfeldi. From what I've seen julidochromis will pair off and find a cave to spawn in. If they're mature enough and have a suitable cave they should spawn shortly after you see them pair off. If you have a lot of them you might want to add some more rock work. They like lots of nooks and crannys to hide and cruise through. Gook luck

you have 4 species together? They aren't cross breeding?
I put the ornatus in from another tank and they were already a breeding pair.My pair of transcriptus are already a pair and have their own cave.A couple of my maleri have paired up and now I am just waiting for my regani to pair up. I think I might just put them by themselves in a 29 gallon till they pair up and once paired I'll put them back into the 90 gallon. No crossbreeding Yet!!Keeping my fingers crossed as about 10 years ago I had regani cross with dickfeldi.

I'd definitely be worried about them crossing, even if it appears as though they've formed a pair. If you've got other tanks, why not keep them in there once they've paired up? I think a 29 is a perfect size for a group of regani.

I would be very weary of keeping regani with ornatus, ornatus with transcriptus (true transcriptus) or transcriptus with marlieri. These will all readily interbreed unless they have already established a strong bond and if recently moved there's no guarantee a pair will stay paired after the move or that a pair will stay paired once the pair forms in the tank they are intended to stay in with the option of all these other fish to hybridize with.
It's not even recommended to keep Juli's with Chalinochromis sp. since they so closely resemble one another.
I would definitely split them up if you intended on raising fry from these spawns.
Otherwise, if you didn't intend on raising or distributing any fry from the resulting spawns, it would be OK to keep them all together. You'd still need to keep an eye out for conspecific aggression. The smaller, less aggressive Julies (ornatus and trans) are very likely to get bullied by the marlieri and regani once they really start getting some size on them.
