I was thinking of ordering some of these online and adding them to my large fish diet. Has anyone ever used these and have thoughts about them? The site I would order from has 100 for $8.19 and suggests keeping them in the fridge and they will last for weeks. I dont mind keeping them in the fridge, but how many weeks do you think they will last? Im thinking it would take me a few months to go through that many worms. They would be fed to my Oscar, Herichthys Carpintis, Andinoacara Stalsbergi, and a Managuense.

I feed Canadian night crawlers to electric catfish. It makes up about 25% of his diet. They seem to stay fresh in the fridge. But mine do not stay in there for to long. You gotta think they stay in the fridge at the place that sells them for a long time before people buy them. So I would think a couple of weeks would be just fine. You may need to wet the soil they are in or even change it after a month or 2. But they should do fine.

I know that they won't last months in a fridge, maybe three weeks. They are called Red Wigglers here and 100 only last me about 2 weeks. That's not because they go bad that fast, it's because my fish go through that many. You can also save a few and raise your own worms. It's very easy and cheap.

These are the same worms that I found at the local Wallmart for $2.76 for 30, they also carry the Canadian nightcrawlers (x20 per pkg, but bigger worms=same price) too.

I have just recently found that they are a FAVORITE of my Bowfin-even over feeder fish. My oscars, knifes and bichirs scoop them up readily too but I don't feed as a staple to them, all else are eating Cichlid Gold and and just introduced/mixed in Massivore Delight.

Thanks, bigbadfish711, for the idea of moistening the soil-I need to add more to mine...I am collecting worms now, in an attempt to raise them. What do you feed the worms? I just added a few flakes of fish food on top of the soil container and mixed it in, I figured it will be the only way to feed my poly's, oscars, and bowfin flake food!

Do you feed the fish worms every day? I dont mind doing that as long as they still eat the pellets. I figured the worms werent very high in nutrition. Also, what do you do to raise them? I will Google it, but I always like first hand xp from people.

You can raise them in large Rubbermaid bins with holes punched in the lid for air. They need soil with organic material mixed in like lettuce, peanut shells, and other vegetables. I wouldn't add meat because the smell of rotting flesh is horrendous. Vegetables are better or some dry pet foods. Turn the soil every few weeks and make sure that the soil is moist but not soaked. They reproduce better if kept in warm and dark places. A few worms will turn into many before long. This is my technique and it works very well!

Thanks Gruff Master,

Sounds easy enough to do this next to the tanks out in the garage, besides, it's less of a walk out to the compost pit. ;)

No problem. A garage is a great place to keep them. Oh, I forgot to tell you that it's not necessary to add food in the bins everyday. The decomposing matter will provide food for a long time. Just check the soil when you turn it over to make sure that it still has food matter in it. A little really goes a long way.

I wish I could keep them in the garage, but it gets cold here in the winter. Do you suggest going to Walmart to get a hundred or so? Also, will plain dirt be good or should I go for a nice topsoil?
