OK, I'm prepared to get beat up on this one, but I had an idea the evening after my 10"+ Aro jump out, (luckly I was there and grabbed him quickly and he is doing fine.)

Has anyone built a tank that would allow or even encourage the jumping urges of these guys?

Now what I am imagining is like a squared funnel built on to of the aquarium out of plexi or some other smooth material that would allow them to slide back into the water. I was thinking it would be cool to place a large root, or tree type item in the center of the tank coming out of the water and allow them to jump for the food like they can do in the wild.

I'm sure that landing on the surface wouldn't be the most enjoyable thing for them, but its just an initial idea I was seeing if anyone had thought of it or even tried such a set up..

Again I'm ready for the onslaught of negative remarks so fire away if you must, I wont cry about it...

I had a similar idea. I wanted to make a big tank and just put a thicjer bug screen up to the roof. That way if they did jump they would just hit the net. What worries me though is having them hit the edge of the tank or smack the plexiglass glass hard. I'm sure it could be done though and I've seen it done

I think you would have to oversize the tank quite a lot, and that the results would be less than desired.

I think everyone who really knows and owned an Aro especially Silvers thought of this idea.:) I would love to see more focus on this , maybe it would solve the drop eye for many Aro's.

Maybe aro's shouldn't be kept in tanks. I don't believe that drop eye is caused by arowana hitting a canopy or whatever when jumping, someday somebody will do a study and find the gene.

I agree with you, I think in the wild Silver Aro's focus above the surface at all times, but in the aquarium where there instinctive ability to jump and catch prey is no longer an option causing the Aro to unnaturally look down for food. Just my opinion:)

Large deep aquarium with a large turtle basking ramp would survice for this.

They are also quite easy to build as opposed to more complicated options??

That's a good set up Reprancher, I'm wanting to do an on floor indoor open top pond/tank type set up, but that's going to have to wait until we buy a home.

I have about 2 feet of space above the water line in my tank. The only fish that I have seen that really took advantage of it was a gold fish I used to cycle it with. ONce it realized there was no glass it was having a jump fest for the first day or so after it realized it could. The other goldfish I had could care less. So that was kind of neat.. seeing a fish seeming to enjoy itself or actually playing.

I also have cichlids that would jump up to a foot out of the water to eat cobweb spiders along the edge of the water line. Rainbow sharks will jump occasionally too.

But I don't have any arrows.
