In the research i have been doing in preparation of buying an arowana i keep hearing alot about them jumping out of tanks and being "jumpers" in general. Yet, every video depicts them as casual and laid back, just cruising the tank. Is the retail value worth the risk?

Imo you NEED a lid to keep arowana. They are laid back and calm for the most part but they are also easily spooked. The other factor you need to remember is that in the wild, they jump out of the water for food. Too many stories on here about arowana's being dried out on the floor because of no lid on a tank.

this.

I have seen hundreds of laid back aros dried on the floor and will keep on seeing them...:(

And it must be a STRONG lid. Heavy. They break through the glass if they really decide to jump.

And, as babies, every crevice in the tank, pipe and heater inlets, etc, are a real danger.

Ya I agree mines a small baby silver aro I just opened the lid to feed him and there his on the floor
I picked him and put him back
Amd now he is his jolly hood self again

Yeah they jump like crazy. My new black aro who cost me almost $400 after shipping has hit the top of the tank a few times while I'm in the tank cleaning. He's calm most of the time, but if I go in to net out food particles or something all bets are off!
