i havent seen any aggro issues in my pond since i got all the fish in there, the only problem i have had was the first day the 3 jd's decided to use the skimmer and spillway like a slip and slide, and the largest of the 3 was laying on the floor behind the lower section, so i put in a grate to keep them in the upper, the next day when i came into the room the largest jack jumped out the side of the pond. i quickly put him back in. this morning i went down stairs to turn lights on and there he is dry as the desert laying on the floor. anyone else have a jd that was bound and determined to kill itself?

I have a dozen or so rimless tanks that do not have lids and I am breeding Dempseys (Blue, Gold & Standard)… So yes I’ve had to deal with a few jumpers… but I do not believe they are committing suicide. Animals will protect their lives at all costs so I cannot believe they are killing themselves ‘on purpose’.

I’ve had stressed fish jump out of a tank while avoiding the dominant fish… I’ve had dominant fish jump out while chasing smaller fish… I’ve had curious fish jump out while trying to swim ‘upstream’ in an HOB… But I’ve never had a depressed fish that wasn’t being harassed just give up his will to live and commit suicide…

What kind of ‘Pond’ do you have? I had a 300 gal Rubbermaid set up for Cichlids for several years. I learned to simply keep the water level 6~10 below the top rim.

Thats sad... he just thought there was a better place... :(

Can you place egg crate sheets on it ,or you don't care for the look?

I am setting up a 125 gallon and since room is warm all yr long going to just use egg crate as cover plus want window light to shine in from top .

just avoiding another fish most likely, as said a few posts ago...would happen in tanks too if there wouldn't be for glass top

Egg Crate would solve my problem with the rimless tanks... and if the problem becomes persistant a I will go that route... but for the time being I'm keeping the fish in the tanks by stocking them in a way no one wants to leave...

I tried putting eggcrate on my 300 gal (6' round) Rubbermaid but this highly limited the viewing angle on a tank that already had a limited viewing angle... so I don't think this would work for the Original Poster either ;)

my tank/pond is 8x8x2.5. so i dont think they make egg crates large enough to cover it. i have 20 egg crates in it though for hiding spots, lots of smaller hiding spots for the smaller fish to hide from the larger fish. for some reason it was only the jd's that were jumping. all 3 went down the spillway and no other fish did. there are smaller fish in the pond and they dont have a prob. the largest jd is the only one that made it out of the pond. on the third time it died. the other ones learned there lesson when they went down the spillway into the lower section with my 10" amarillo. im just glad i was able to net them out before he killed them. just really wierd that the only prob ive had is the jd's.
