While I was getting ready for work this week I walked past one of my tanks and scared the crap outta my male festae. He managed to jump through a small slit in the back of the tank and went airborne about 6"-7" above the tank. He managed to land behind the tank, in the worst possible spot. After a mad scramble to find my long net I squeeze under the stand, fished him out and got him back in the tank. Thank god I was home bc my wife is afraid of fish and she told me she would not have been able to net him. I've got the slit temporarily blocked for now. I'm trying to avoid buying a new glass lid, thinking up some DIY ways to secure the slit a little better. May be ill drill some holes I. The back and secure some egg crate that u have laying around into the space. Def almost gave me a scare.

A similar thing happened to me with my male festae. I startled him I guess, he jumped up and hit the bottom of the cover on the tank knocking a big chunk of scales off of his face. Luckily I had the cover on and he didn't make it out of the tank.
I think that festae are a little more jumpy then other cichlids.

I'm planning to move the tank to a spot that gets a little less traffic. May be he will settle in that way.he's weird he watches me from a clay pot whenever I'm in my bedroom, but still bolts whenever I get close to the tank. Smh

I have several pairs and some are very calm and some are skidish and hide every time I enter the room. Is there any other fish in the tank?
Some dithers will help them feel more comfortable and safe.

The only other fish in the tank right now is my female festae. I have a divider up bc my pair are very violent with each other. I had to out construction paper on the side of the tank bc the female could see fish in another tank and she went nuts banging the glass. I doubt anything would survive if I added something.

I understand, I have a pair like that. I have one male that has never hurt another fish and I have one that is psycho and has killed two females.

I dunno festae specifically but maybe more traffic would help.. I have a 40B with 7 growing out and they are skittish too, but for the time being they are lower level of a 2 tier stand which I don't think is helping and they've only been in the tank around 2 weeks (only kep festae for 3 weeks). Hopefully they settle down abit.

So Festae is no Midas or Jacquar. They are only spouse beater, but timid like Jack Dampsey. I have no experience with adult Festae, only growing out small ones. In a group, Festae juvies are not timid as they are too busy watching out their back.
