My clown knife, like all others, goes up for air quite frequently. I got used to it durring the night and it didnt wake me up. Until recently. Since I transfered him from my 55 gallon to my 90 gallon he has started going up for air really fast and breaking the surface on occasion. It is really loud and splashes water around. Is there any way to discourage this behaviour? I tried putting floating plants across the surface but he still did it.

Your tank might have low oxygen levels. Add an air stone. This might help. But Clown Knive will usually gulp some air once in awhile no matter what.

i know guys that have frontosa, and he had problems with them gulping air, and floating. so he put a screen about 1" below the water. large enough for food to sink through but to small for them to be able to reach the top. it worked from what i saw, but not sure what kind of screen, and if he had to change it often, etc. im sure you could rig something to prevent him from reaching the top.

DON'T DO THE SCREEN IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some fish require periodic breathes of air - your clown is very likely to DROWN if you do that screen. Awful as it sounds, I've lost two prized lungfish that way, but that is another story.

DO NOT DO THE SCREEN.

Your clown knife is displaying perfectly normal behavior - taking gulps of air. Your bigger tank simply allows him to reach the surface at higher speeds, causing a larger splash. If you don't like it, ... well... then it's not the right fish for you.
This is how they go up for air.

Dont worry I never even considered the screen idea. I just hope he calms down a bit, he is spashing water through the hood.

This is not agitated behavior, but normal, breathing behavior. It's just his actual body slamming the water. He cannot help it.
Maybe put a layer of something soft along the hood or something to help cover up the noise a bit???
