It does seem dovii are becoming really popular but that's not why I'm getting one... seems like as long as I can remember I've always wanted to keep one, anyways I've got a 125 that will be getting emptied here shortly and I've decided to finally get one. Looking for ideas in what direction to go. I'm not really sure if I should try growing something out with it or just hope for a big good looking male and call it good? Any opinions or ideas??

Tank space isn't an issue. I've got XL peacock bass in a 400 now but I have a 20 ft tank in the garage I'm working on getting into the basement here in a month or two... The 125 will just be a start.. IN MY DREAMS I would like to see the dovii in the 20ft tank with my cichla and rays, I just don't know if that should even be considered... My plan with the dovii is to always have dithers like silver dollars or tinfoils and a cool pleco in its tank. In hopes that maybe it will grow up being used to other fish in its realm lol. But I maybe just barking up the wrong tree here...

I'm tossing around the idea of getting a pair, but I don't want to deal with the breeding aggression ect. I also think (with other sp) if male has been with a female they tend to be more agressive than a male that's never "paired off". That's just my theory tho

ya and i have seen your 20ft tank thread just failed to realize it was you. i have think in the 15' tank you will have the fish will be fine i know someone with a 350 gallon tank that successfully kept other cichlids in with a 20'' male dovii. if it comes down to it just put the bass in the 15' tank and the dovii in the 400 gallon if it gets to aggressive mine at 10'' really wont let another male with him since he has his women. i do have a non sexuallymature male with him right now but i think thats just because he is small and quick

This was my thoughts / hoping. Was that if I raise a single male with a lot of fast non aggressive fish and introduce him to the cichla around 10-12" where it will be the smallest in the tank if I can hopefully get away with less aggression... My thoughts were if it turned mean and started attacking the other fish would I have enough time to notice it before its too late? Could it kill another fish in hours or days

I would get a dovii as a baby, it is fun to watch them grow & they grow fast
I would try to get a pair also

Correct me if I'm wrong but my thoughts are if I get a pair I'm almost guaranteed that I will have to keep them in their own tank for life and would have little to no chance at keeping them with other cichlids.. Where as if I get a single male I MAY have a chance at him being a little more mellow?

That is true if you have a pair then you would probably not be able to keep anything else in the tank

as for growth rate...

here is my male
